The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that from 2016 to 2026, employment in the health education sector will grow 16 percent and healthcare occupations generally will grow 18 percent – both much faster than the national average for all occupations. With this growth in mind, the Luther College Board of Regents unanimously approved multiple changes to the college’s Health and Physical Education Department, including renaming the department to Health Promotion and Exercise Science to better reflect changes to the program.

Area musicians are now invited to enroll for the second semester of the Luther College Community Music School. Luther’s music education students are gearing up for the spring session of LCCMS which is open to anyone in the Decorah area.

Luther College’s fall 2018 Dean’s List includes 739 students; 169 first-years, 137 sophomores, 162 juniors and 272 seniors. To be named to the Dean’s List, a student must earn a semester grade point average of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale and must complete at least 12 credit hours with 10 hours of conventional grades (A, B, C, D).

Luther College received a grant of $2,000 from the American Legion of Iowa Foundation in support of scholarships for veterans and members of their families.
Luther College will spray the lawns with herbicides to provide well-maintained, visually attractive grounds for Luther students, employees and visitors, and to control undesirable weeds on athletic fields. Weather permitting, the date for spraying is the evening of Friday, Oct. 12, with Saturday, Oct. 13, and Sunday, Oct. 14, set as back up days as needed.
Luther College announced the appointment of seven new faculty members for the 2018-19 academic year.

Mark Franz recently was hired as the executive director for Information Technology Services at Luther College. He replaced Paul Mattson, who transitioned into a teaching role at the college.

The Norwegian-American Historical Association is pleased to name Anna M. Peterson, Luther College assistant professor of history, as the Association’s new editor. For the past decade Peterson has been an active scholar in the field of Norwegian-American history. She will hold the two roles concurrently.

Four Luther College faculty were named to endowed positions at the college’s Opening Convocation Thursday, Aug. 30. Maren Johnson, Luther College assistant professor of Scandinavian studies, was named the director of Luther’s new Richard L. and Judith A. Torgerson Center for Nordic Studies; Steve Holland, Luther professor of economics, was named the Bert M. and Mildred O. Dahl Chair in Economics; Anna Peterson, Luther assistant professor of history, was granted the Nena Amundson Distinguished Professorship; and David Thompson, Luther professor of Spanish, was granted the Dennis M. Jones Distinguished Teaching Professorship in the Humanities. The four have already begun preparing for these new roles.
The Luther College Board of Regents announced the members of the presidential search committee who will lead the process to identify Luther College’s 11th president. In May, President Paula Carlson announced she will retire after the conclusion of the 2018-19 academic year.
