Dr. Jenifer K. Ward, provost and dean of the college for Centenary College of Louisiana in Shreveport, Louisiana, has been unanimously elected Luther College’s 11th president, announced today by Luther’s Board of Regents.

Luther College President Paula J. Carlson has announced the appointment of Lisa M. Scott as vice president for equity, inclusion and student success. Scott has served as the inaugural dean for institutional equity and inclusion at Luther since August 2017.

Jim Martin-Schramm, Luther College professor of religion, has been announced as the new director of the Center for Sustainable Communities. He serves a three-year term as director beginning spring semester of the 2018-2019 academic year.

Storm Bailey, professor of philosophy at Luther College has been appointed as The Center for Ethics and Public Engagement faculty research fellow. The appointment is for two years beginning in the fall of 2019.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that from 2016 to 2026, employment in the health education sector will grow 16 percent and healthcare occupations generally will grow 18 percent – both much faster than the national average for all occupations. With this growth in mind, the Luther College Board of Regents unanimously approved multiple changes to the college’s Health and Physical Education Department, including renaming the department to Health Promotion and Exercise Science to better reflect changes to the program.

Area musicians are now invited to enroll for the second semester of the Luther College Community Music School. Luther’s music education students are gearing up for the spring session of LCCMS which is open to anyone in the Decorah area.

Luther College’s fall 2018 Dean’s List includes 739 students; 169 first-years, 137 sophomores, 162 juniors and 272 seniors. To be named to the Dean’s List, a student must earn a semester grade point average of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale and must complete at least 12 credit hours with 10 hours of conventional grades (A, B, C, D).

Luther College received a grant of $2,000 from the American Legion of Iowa Foundation in support of scholarships for veterans and members of their families.

Luther College will spray the lawns with herbicides to provide well-maintained, visually attractive grounds for Luther students, employees and visitors, and to control undesirable weeds on athletic fields. Weather permitting, the date for spraying is the evening of Friday, Oct. 12, with Saturday, Oct. 13, and Sunday, Oct. 14, set as back up days as needed.
