Gender-Inclusive Housing

Luther College Residence Life is committed to providing comfortable, welcoming, and safe housing options for all students, including those identifying as LGBTQIA+. Read on for a few options for students interested in gender-inclusive living.

For more information about housing at Luther, visit the Residence Life site.

First-Year Housing

Luther offers co-ed housing for incoming first-year students in Brandt Hall on one floor.  The housing option is a co-ed wing that contains double rooms with same-sex roommates. The floor contains a gender-inclusive restroom/shower room shared by all residents on the wing. The term gender-inclusive refers to a space where any sex or gender, including the opposite sex and students who do not identify with any particular gender, share the floor restroom/shower facility. In early June, more information will be sent to students who indicated their interest on the housing application of living on the co-ed floor with gender inclusive restrooms. At that time students can either commit to living on the floor or decline living on the floor. If there are any questions, please contact the Residence Life Office at 563-387-1330.

Upper-Class Housing

Baker Village

Baker Village is designed to give groups of four, or six, students the opportunity to live together as a peer group in townhouse-style units with either four, or six, single rooms. Groups may be single-sex or co-ed.

College Apartments

The College Apartments provide a more independent living environment for upper-class students while retaining campus connections.  There are options for both apartments with or without kitchens.

Farwell Gender-Inclusive Cluster

The second-floor center cluster of Farwell Hall is designated as a Gender-Inclusive Housing cluster. This is a voluntary living environment that allows for students to live with each other regardless of how they identify with respect to gender. The cluster is designed for students who identify and/or support the LGBTQIA+ community, are exploring gender identity/expression, or choose not to be classified based on gender. The cluster is made up of three single rooms and five double rooms.

Farwell Co-Ed Cluster

Co-ed cluster groups include 10 students in five double rooms. The cluster will have two rooms of one sex and three of the opposite sex. An RA will occupy one single room. The other three single rooms in the cluster will be selected during single room draw, which will be held immediately after cluster and suite draw. Half of the single rooms in the cluster will be male students and half female students.

Larsen Hall

Ground floor Larsen Hall is a gender-inclusive living environment. Students may apply with their roommate of choice regardless of sex or gender. The room draw process for the gender-inclusive floor in Larsen Hall takes place during the standard double room draw process.

Prairie Houses

Prairie Houses are upper-class residence halls located in nearby residential neighborhoods and are within a five minute walk of Luther campus.  Each house provides a group of seven students with the opportunity to live together as a peer group.

If I’m transgender, are these my only options?

No, there are several options that can serve an individual’s needs. We encourage and welcome those who identify as transgender (see glossary of terms) to work privately with Residence Life in order to find the most reasonable and comfortable housing, regardless of the identifying gender of prospective roommates.
