Printing

Printing is available to anyone on campus, including students, faculty, staff, and guests. Students print to lab printers through their personally-owned devices or using a lab/classroom computer, employees request printer setup on their Luther-owned devices from the Document Center, and guests can print at Preus Library or the Document Center.

Student printing

Students can print from their personally-owned computer, mobile device, or Chromebook while on campus and connected to LCWireless or LCSecure or using a wired connection. First time users will need to set up their device. After sending the print job, students need to release the job from PaperCut.

Setting up printers

  1. Connect to the LCWireless or LCSecure wireless network or to the wired network with an ethernet cable.
You’ll need to register your device if you haven’t done so already.
  2. Complete setup steps for your device.

Note: Printers installed prior to Fall 2021 will still work, but may fail if the printer is updated or replaced. We recommend that you remove old printers from your device and complete the setup steps linked above.

Sending a print job

  1. Connect to the LCWireless or LCSecure wireless network or to the wired network with an ethernet cable.
  2. Print a document from your device.
Mobile devices often list printing along with other sharing options.
  3. When you’re ready to collect your print job, visit papercut.lc.luther.edu and choose “release”.
Using your phone? Try the new made-for-mobile release page.

Paying for printing

Students are given a semester-based allowance for black & white printing, with the capacity to add their own funds using NordiCash. Refunds may be requested through the “Recent Print Jobs” section of PaperCut.

Available printers

There are numerous black & white printers available to students throughout campus. This includes a printer in every Residence Hall and most academic buildings and common areas. There are also cash-based specialty printing services in the Document Center and color printing in Preus Library.

Color printing

Students usually print in color in one of two ways: by sending the job to the Document Center, or by printing from designated lab computers in Preus Library. Prints for the Document Center can be submitted in a variety of ways. Color printing in the library must originate from one of the Windows lab computers on Preus Library’s Main Floor—the job must be paid for in cash at the printer near the DVDs. Regardless of method, these prints are $0.25 per side and cannot be paid for with PaperCut. Recognized student organizations may print in color in the Student Organizational Suite in the Union. These print jobs are charged to the organization rather than the student.

Printing for work-study

If you need to print as part of your work-study, you should have been given a student worker Norse Key (e.g. username_sw). When signed into your work-study computer with your “_SW” account, printing doesn’t affect your personal quota. If your department has not requested a student worker Norse Key for you, please have your supervisor contact the Technology Help Desk.

Bringing personal printers to campus

Because printers are plentiful and the printing allowance is more than sufficient for the vast majority of students, we recommend that students leave their personal printers at home. If a student does bring their own printer, we require them to disable any feature that would broadcast a wi-fi network.

Faculty/Staff printing

Faculty and staff should contact the Document Center if they need new printers installed or changes made to their current printers, like adding the ability to hold a print job for release at the printer. Lab and classroom printers may not be installed on employees’ personally-owned devices.

Faculty and staff should print from Luther-owned workstations to the printers within their departmental suite using an unlimited quota paid for by their department. We recommend printing through the Document Center for any job over 50 pages, as it is more cost effective. If faculty and staff must use a printer in a lab or classroom, the job will need to be released from PaperCut, just like a student print job.

Guest printing

Guests can print in black & white from the public workstations in Preus Library and can order specialty prints (including color) in the Document Center on the lower level of the Main Building. The public-access printer in the Library is cash-only.

Assistance

The Document Center services physical problems with printers across campus Monday through Friday. For all other issues, including after-hours service, low paper, issues with PaperCut, and more, contact the Technology Help Desk. For specialty printing, visit the Document Center on the lower level of Main. They can assist with a wide variety of services, including poster and booklet printing, color printing, odd-sizes, specialty papers, and large jobs.
