PaperCut
PaperCut (papercut.lc.luther.edu) is Luther’s print management solution. Whenever a student prints, the job is held in PaperCut, allowing the student to prepare multiple print jobs and release them all at once. Employees also use PaperCut, but do not need to interact with the system.
How to install printers
Current students can install Luther printers on computers and mobile devices—See our printing guide. Faculty and Staff should contact the Document Center to have printers installed.
How to use PaperCut
- Print one or more jobs.
- Log in at papercut.lc.luther.edu
- Navigate to the “Jobs Pending Release” section.
- Release or cancel individual jobs by clicking “print” or “cancel” next to the job. You can also use the “Release All” or “Cancel All” buttons to work with all pending print jobs at once.
Troubleshooting
The PaperCut page can’t be loaded while connected to the “Luther College Guest” wireless network, when only using cellular data instead of a wifi connection, when off campus, or when using a VPN. Students should typically use the “Luther College” wireless network, which requires a one-time registration at wifi.luther.edu.
More obscure causes include using a static DNS instead of a dynamic DNS, an antivirus or security software that is aggressively blocking traffic to unknown sites, and firewall settings on your device.
A good temporary workaround is to print from a lab computer.
Either you’re actually using the wrong password or you’ve locked your account by accumulating several failed logins spread between lab computers, PaperCut, and a few other systems. This is especially common in the weeks after you reset your Norse Key password, either because your device is auto-filling an old password or because your fingers and brain disagree about what the right password is.
You can definitively determine that your account is locked by attempting to log in to a lab computer—If you receive an error message that says “Referenced account is locked”, then contact the Technology Help Desk.
If your account is not locked, verify that you’re able to hand type your password correctly on another site, like mylogin.luther.edu. An incognito/private window is helpful. If you can’t successfully hand-type your password, then reset your Norse Key password.
It’s very likely that the print job never left your computer—this is especially common on Apple computers, especially the first time you print or following a password reset.
If you use a Mac, look for a printer icon in your dock (i.e. the row of app icons that is usually at the bottom of the screen)—if you find it, open it. Typically print jobs are stuck here because your computer doesn’t know the right username and password to use for this printer—if this is the case, you’ll see a message like “hold for authentication” and often a circular “refresh” arrow icon at the far right of each listed print job. Click the “refresh” arrow to correct the credentials. By default, your computer will provide the wrong username—it will put in the username to your computer, but this needs to be your Luther Norse Key username (i.e. the first part of your email address). The password should be your current Norse Key password. If this solved your problem, remember that this will happen again, the next time your reset your password.
If you don’t use a Mac OR the steps above didn’t work, then make sure you can load the PaperCut website on the same device that you’re trying to print from. If you can’t, see the Troubleshoot section “Can’t load PaperCut page“. If you can load the website, make sure that printing isn’t paused on your device—on a computer, look for a printer icon on the bottom of the screen.
If you’re using a lab computer or other Luther workstation, there are several things to check:
- If you’re in Preus Library, the lab computers have printers installed that don’t use PaperCut — typically you should be printing to “Preus Library main floor” or “Preus Library lower floor”.
- On other lab computers, makes you’re printing to “any student printer” or a specific lab computer—sometimes you might accidentally be choosing “save as pdf”, etc.
- Make sure you’re logging in to the computer and PaperCut with the same username. If you walked up to a computer that was still signed in, log out and then in again. If you’re at your student work job and sign in to the computer with your SW account, use that same account to log in to PaperCut.
- In offices, your print job will auto-release from PaperCut without any action required from you. PaperCut will show the job in the “Recent Print Jobs” section rather than the “Jobs pending release” section.
