CIES stands with the Black community to mourn the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Rayshard Brooks and so many others. We strongly support Black Lives Matter and the protests, and we (re)commit ourselves to dismantling systemic racism and injustice. We stand with our students of color, and pledge to proactively pursue actions that make Luther and our wider community more equitable, inclusive, and safe.
To our international students: We strongly encourage you to educate yourselves about systemic racism as it manifests in the United States. While racism and xenophobia is a global problem, in order to understand the current protests and situation, you must know about the specific history of race and oppression in the United States of America. There are many books, videos and articles that you can easily access to begin this journey. We are here to support you however we can.
The Center for Intercultural Engagement & Student Success (CIES) is a student-centered office that focuses on student engagement and success, building intercultural relationships and guiding students towards self-agency for their futures.
Through intentional, intercultural and intersectional expertise, the Center helps to inform the campus about pertinent issues and promotes skill acquisition around constructive dialogue and conflict resolution.
The Center supports the in-classroom experience by creating intentional opportunities for applied learning and activities that enrich campus climate and learning environment.
It works with student identity and interest groups to promote inter and intra-group collaboration and understanding and strengthen leadership opportunities and intercultural competence skills.
