Luther College will celebrate Commencement at 9 a.m. Sunday, May 26, in Carlson Stadium, where President Paula Carlson will confer the Bachelor of Arts degree on Luther’s class of 2019. Luther alumna Vanessa (Grima Baldacchino) Frazier, Maltese ambassador and humanitarian, will receive an honorary degree and give the Commencement address.

Luther College will hold a “Pitch Off” competition featuring finalists for the 2019 Erdman Prize for Entrepreneurship at 10 a.m. Friday, May 10, in Marty’s on the ground floor of the Dahl Centennial Union.

As part of the festival celebration “Days of Russian Culture,” Luther College’s Balalaika Ensemble performs at 7 p.m. Friday, June 7 in The Museum of Russian Art (TMORA) in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Discussing the impact of technology on culture, Yvonne Förster, a research professor at Shanxi University-Taiyuan, China, and a professor of philosophy at Leuphana University-Lüneburg, Germany, will speak at Luther College. She will present the lecture, “Transcending the Human: Technology and the Liberal Arts,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, in Olin room 102 on Luther’s campus. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission.

From humble beginnings, Mexico City based artist Juan de Lascurain took chances and learned from his experiences to grow as a designer and entrepreneur. Now running his own brand, de Lascurain will speak with Luther College students at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 6, in F. W. Olin Building, Room 102.

Illustrating boat transportation on the Mississippi throughout America’s history Jim Eckblad, Luther College professor emeritus of biology, will present the lecture, “A Boating History of the Mighty Mississippi” at Luther’s Emeriti Colloquium at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 9, in the Mott Room of the Dahl Centennial Union on Luther’s campus.

As part of the “Here’s My Story” series, Luther College will present an LGBT+ Experiences and Identities panel. This panel will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, in Valders Hall of Science, Room 206. There will be a reception to follow in the Science Atrium of Valders.

Luther College presents entrepreneurship speaker, Luther alumnus and accomplished gaming executive Lorenzo Creighton ’75, as he speaks about his experiences at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 29, in F.W. Olin Building, Room 102. This event is open to the public with no charge for admission. Creighton is an accomplished gaming executive with experience and knowledge of the regulatory environment, operational strategies and business opportunities that build revenues and cohesive community relationships

Luther College’s dance troupe Orchesis will perform their Spring Showcase at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 27, and 1 p.m. Sunday, April 28, in the Jewel Theatre in the Center for The Arts on the Luther campus. The Showcase will include a selection of pieces choreographed by Luther students and a featured piece choreographed by alumna Chris Johnson, ’87, Luther’s first dance major. The guest artist residency for Orchesis was made possible by Luther’s Lecture and Fine Arts Committee.

The students of Jonah Elrod, visiting assistant professor of music, will debut their original compositions at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music on the Luther campus. Developed during the spring 2019 semester, this recital will feature music composed by Luther senior Jamie Swartley, junior Brooke Prohaska, sophomores Julia Ferris and Jacob Southerland, and first-year Eric Bacon. The pieces feature a string quartet, viola and piano, solo flute, solo violin and electronic music.
