Transitioning Personal Digital Services for Employed Alumni

Luther accounts and assigned computer equipment are primarily for Luther-related work. If you don’t already have a personal email account, please create one. Personal files should be stored on personally owned devices or within personally owned accounts.

If you are currently employed at Luther and are from the class of 2018 or earlier, you may request an email-only @alumni.luther.edu account by contacting the Technology Help Desk. While the original deadline was December 1, 2022, we’ve extended the deadline to opt-in to December 15, 2022.

If you are currently employed at Luther and are from the class of 2019 or later, you are not eligible for an @alumni.luther.edu account. You are responsible for creating your own personal email account. You may create one at mail.google.com or through another email provider.

Once you have a personal email account, you may want to move emails, contacts, or docs out of your Luther Norse Apps account. Detailed steps can be found at Transitioning Norse Apps for Employed Alumni .

Notes:

  • Employees from the Class of 2018 or earlier who leave during this timeframe (11/1/2021-12/15/2022) have 30 days from their employment end date to transition their account to their new email-only @alumni.luther.edu account. They may have their account deactivated later upon supervisor/cabinet decision.
  • Employees from the Class of 2019 or later who leave during this timeframe must remove any personal data from their @luther.edu account prior to their last day.

Why is this happening?

For many years, Luther has been pleased to offer alumni email and associated applications through our institutional Google account. Unfortunately, Google has announced that, effective July 2022, they will no longer be providing colleges and universities with unlimited file storage. Due to this change, the college will need to retain the limited file storage it will be allocated primarily for internal use to conduct the business of the college.

Despite the changes announced by Google, the college would like to honor its original commitment of a Luther email account, but can no longer make available all the other Google apps to which you may have been accustomed. Additionally, it is now considered best practice to only use educational email domains for current students or employees.
