“Making Change,” a collection of works responding to issues of hatred and violence, will be on display in the Center for Faith and Life Gallery March 6 through April 6. David Kamm, Luther College assistant professor of art and Gallery Coordinator, created all of the works in the exhibit.
Luther College alumnae Beth Ray Westlund, mezzo soprano, and Ann Elise Schoenecker, soprano, will present a voice recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, in the Noble Recital Hall in Luther’s Jenson-Noble Hall of Music.
Luther College was awarded a $200,000 grant from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust to enhance curriculum and provide educational laboratory experiences for students in the new neuroscience major.
Since 2011, the arrival of refugees from the Syrian conflict has provoked anti-refugee and pro-refugee movements that either “demonize” or “idealize” them. Ashalul Aden, Luther sophomore, and Pedro dos Santos, assistant professor of political science, will present the first Paideia Texts and Issues lecture of the spring semester at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall on the Luther campus.
For the third year in a row, a group from Luther College is competing in the National Trumpet Competition.
Luther College students Shannon Meehan, senior; Elizabeth Glennon, junior; and Anna Li Holey, senior; and alumni Laurie Adrian, Luther class of 2016; and Brian Gerike, Luther class of 2012; won second place in the undergraduate student ecology poster competition at the national meeting of the Entomological Society of America in Denver, Colorado, in November.
With 20 fingers and one passion, the Unison Piano Duo comprised of Luther College piano faculty members Du Huang and Xiao Hu will present a concert at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, in Noble Recital Hall, Jenson-Noble Hall of Music, on the Luther campus.
The Modern Language Association awarded the Katherine Singer Kovacs Prize for an outstanding book published in English or Spanish in the field of Latin American and Spanish literatures and cultures to Luther College’s Nancy J. Gates Madsen for her book “Trauma, Taboo, and Truth-Telling: Listening to Silences in Postdictatorship Argentina,” published by the University of Wisconsin Press.
Recently returning from their January Term trip to Namibia and South Africa, 21 Luther College students who participated in the Music 245: “Choral Singing in Namibia and South Africa,” course will present a program at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, in the Noble Recital Hall of Jenson-Noble Hall of Music on the Luther campus.
Photography captures more than a moment in time, it creates and adds to a larger narrative of history. “Remembering Martin Luther King Jr.: From hate to hope,” a photography exhibit curated by Luther College students, is a commemoration of the life and tragic death of Martin Luther King, Jr. on the 50th anniversary of his assassination.
