Luther sophomore Joshua Burniece awarded the 2018 Rosholt Distinction scholarship
Luther sophomore Joshua Burniece of Burnsville, Minnesota, won the 2018 Rosholt Distinction scholarship in Collaborative Keyboard Performance Sunday, April 29, in the amount of $1,250.
A sophomore music major with a concentration in piano performance, Burniece is the son of Bruce and Belinda Burniece of Burnsville.
He performed a piano recital featuring Richard Strauss’s “Allerseelen,” George Frideric Händel’s “Piangerò la sorte mia” and Dmitri Shostakovich’s Sonata in D minor, Op. 40, 2nd movement.
The Distinction in Accompanying and Collaborative Keyboard Performance Scholarship was established for the purpose of recognizing and encouraging a high level of achievement in the collaborative arts. Participants must be of sophomore or junior standing and have completed a series of requirements.
The scholarship was established and endowed by Robert Rosholt in honor of his wife, Lucille. Lucille Stansberry Rosholt taught piano, voice and music education at Luther from 1955 to 1958. She studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. While raising three children, she found collaborative work at the piano to be a flexible and rewarding outlet for her artistry. Robert and Lucille reside in Decorah.
Luther is home to one of the largest collegiate music programs in the world with six choirs, three bands, three orchestras, two jazz bands and more than 800 student musicians. Luther students participate in large ensembles, faculty-coached chamber groups, private lessons and master classes. More than 275 music majors study music theory, ear training, history, education, composition, jazz, church music and performance.
