Luther College Admissions will hold a Spring Open House on Friday, May 3, to give high school sophomores and juniors an introduction to Luther College. The day includes a campus tour, an admissions workshop, complementary lunch, a trolley tour of Decorah and optional student life and music session.

Luther College’s music department presents the Luther College Jazz Band at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life on the Luther College campus. Directed by Jon Ailabouni, Luther adjunct faculty of music, the performance will include the “Boogie Stop Shuffle” by Charles Mingus, “Katie” and “Basie Straight Ahead” by Sammy Nestico, “Linebacker” and “Riverscape” by Fred Sturm, “Yardbird Suite” by Charlie Parker and “Black and Tan Fantasy” by Duke Ellington.

Steinway artist, frequent concert soloist, avid chamber music performer and dedicated educator, Lei Weng will come to perform at Luther College. He will perform at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 7, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jensen Noble Hall of Music on the Luther campus. The performance is open to the public with no charge of admission.

Discussing the benefits of a liberal arts education, Spruiell White, Luther class of 1967, will give the address at this year’s induction ceremony for new members of the Luther College chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. White will present a lecture at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 28 in the Noble Recital Hall of Luther’s Jenson Noble Hall of Music. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission.

New York born violinist and Korea based international violinist and teacher Naria Kim will perform at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, May 9, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jensen Noble Hall of Music on the Luther campus. The performance is open to the public with no charge of admission.

“What Would Love Do?” Luther’s dance program examines this question through their performances on May 9-11 in the Jewel Theatre in the Center for The Arts on the Luther campus. The performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, and Friday, May 10, and at 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 11.

Luther College President Paula Carlson and Dean of the College Kevin Kraus have announced promotions and grants of tenure for current faculty members. At its Feb. 8-10 meeting in Decorah, the Luther Board of Regents approved tenure for Rachel Brummel, environmental studies/political science; Stephanie Fretham, biology; Joseph Madrigal, art; Anna Peterson, history; Dawn Reding, biology; Jennaya Robison, music; Lindsey Row-Heyveld, English; Justin Sprung, psychology; Robert Vtris, theatre; Alexandra White, management; and Jill Wilson, education. All were promoted to associate professor.

As part of Luther College’s Black Student Union Reunion Weekend, Luther alumna Maxie (Jones) Rockymore ’82, is serving as the keynote speaker for the annual Don Kemp Memorial Lecture at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 25, in the Shirley Baker Commons on Luther’s campus.

Exploring various climate-related issues through lectures, a water walk and performances, the Luther College presents Climate Justice Week April 25-May 2. The week’s events begin with a lecture presented by Jim Martin-Schramm, Luther professor religion and director of the Center for Sustainable Communities, titled “Luther’s Path to Carbon Neutrality,” at 9:45 a.m. Thursday, April 25, in Peace Dining Room.

The Dorian Choral Retreat, now in its second year, will be hosted this summer at Luther College June 28-30. This event is available to all who are interested and at least 19 years of age. The retreat is ideal for Luther alumni, music educators, church musicians, career musicians and folks who just love singing. The goal of the weekend is to be a musical retreat, a way to recharge batteries, an opportunity to take a break from everyday life and a time to explore Decorah and Luther College.
