Luther College to host violinist Naria Kim
New York born violinist and Korea based international violinist and teacher Naria Kim will perform at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, May 9, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jensen Noble Hall of Music on the Luther campus. The performance is open to the public with no charge of admission.
Kim’s performance will include a collection of highlights from the Beethoven Violin Sonatas, including three movements of Beethoven’s Sonata No. 1 Op. 12 in D major “Beginning” for Violin and Piano and four movements of his Sonata No. 5 Op. 24 in F major “Spring” for Violin and Piano followed by a short intermission. The performance will conclude with three movements of Beethoven’s Sonata No. 9 Op. 47 in A major “Kreutzer” for Violin and Piano.
Kim’s accomplishments include being the first prize winner at the Alexander and Buono International String Competition as well as the winner for the Eurasia International Violin Competition and Osaka International Music Competition. Her solo recitals and concert highlights include performances with the Bulgaria Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Korean National Military Symphony Orchestra and performances at the Carnegie Weill Hall, New York Symphony Space Hall, Bulgaria Concet Hall, Seoul Arts Center and many more. Kim has been invited to perform at several international festivals, including the Young Artist Concert of the Elan International Music Festival in Vermont, the Rising Star Series at the Great Mountains International Festival in Korea and the Gala Concert at the Canetti International Music Festival in Italy.
Kim received her bachelor’s degree at the Korea National University of Arts through the early entrance program for gifted students, her master’s degree and artists diploma at Yale School of Music and her Doctor of Musical Arts from Stony Brook University. She has studied with Hyo Kang, Philip Setzer, Sung-Ju Lee and has taken master classes through music festivals and auditions with Igor Ozim, Miriam Fried, Zakhar Bron and many others.
Kim has served as undergraduate violin faculty at the Stony Brook University, Naugatuck Valley Community College and as a lecturer of violin at Chung-Ang University in Korea. She is an active chamber music player trained with the Tokyo String Quartet and Emerson String Quartet. She has performed with with the Beethoven Quartet Project Concert with the Tokyo Quartet and chamber performances with Philip Setzer of the Emerson Quartet. She took part in the “WE Soloists” group in Korea from 2013-2017 and has served as a concertmaster for the New Korea Symphony Orchestra. Currently Kim serves as a lecturer of violin at the Korea National University of Arts.
Luther is home to one of the largest collegiate music programs in the nation, with five choirs, three orchestras, three bands, two jazz bands and more than 800 student musicians. Luther students participate in large ensembles, faculty-coached chamber groups, private lessons and master classes. Nearly 275 music majors study music theory, ear training, history, education, composition, jazz, church music and performance.
