Luther College Alumna Phoebe Jan-McMahon presents exhibit open through Oct. 27
Taking objects found around her living space, painter Phoebe Jan-McMahon strives to create a place for viewers to escape the hustle of life with her work. Her exhibit, "The Adjacent" will be on display through Oct. 27 in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery in the Center for the Arts on the Luther College campus.
The gallery is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Her exhibit explores spaces and objects in her apartment. Her works delve into the quietness of "the adjacent," a place to escape and heal from the brutality of everyday life.
Jan-McMahon, Luther class of 2013, is a member of the Clinton Community College art faculty. As an instructor, Jan-McMahon works to create a space where students of all ability levels grow and learn to accept constructive criticism. "My job as a professor is to introduce students to a variety of ideas and methods so they can find what materials work with their hand and build their own individual style and practice," she said. Her paintings invite viewers to see familiar objects through a new lens.
A native of Madison, Wisconsin, Jan-McMahon received a Bachelor of Arts in studio art with a minor in German from Luther in 2013. She continued her education as a Hixson-Lied Graduate Fellow, graduate teaching assistant and an instructor of record in painting and drawing at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She garnered a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, in 2018.
While still a student at Nebraska, Jan-McMahon presented her first solo exhibition. She also presented "Currents" in 2015 and "Objecthood" during her master's work. She's presented at two shows in her hometown of Madison, Wisconsin.
