Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience will perform Tuesday, Oct. 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life main hall.
Tickets for the performance are on sale now at the Luther College Box Office, (563) 387-1357, open 9-10:30 a.m. and 11a.m.-3 p.m. on weekdays with extended hours on Thursdays until 7 p.m.
Tickets may also be purchased online at http://www.luther.edu/programming/centerstage/simien/. Tickets are priced at $22, $20 for seniors age 65 and over and $15 for youth ages 4-18.
The appearance by Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience is part of Luther's 2010-11 Center Stage Series of professional performing arts events.
Luther will also host a school performance "Creole for Kidz" at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 5, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. "Creole for Kidz" is an educational performance created for grades K-12. It has been presented to over a quarter of a million students around the world.
Tickets for "Creole for Kids" are $3.50 per person.
Terrance Simien is an eighth generation creole artist. "Simien's sextet is one of zydeco's most innovative groups," according to the Boston Globe.
Leading his Zydeco Experience band, Simien has become one of the most respected and internationally recognized artists in roots music today. He has performed more than 5,000 concerts, toured millions of miles to more than 40 countries and reached at least a million people during his eventful 25 year career.
Simien's music is a hypnotic blend of Zydeco roots, New Orleans funk, reggae, African and Caribbean music. Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience was the first Zydeco group to incorporate reggae and African influence. The two main instruments involved in Creole music are the accordion and the frottoir (washboard).
During the past 25 years Simien has shared studio and stage with Robert Palmer, Stevie Wonder, Los Lobos, Taj Mahal, Dr. John, the Meters, Alan Toussaint, Paul Simon and the Dave Matthews Band.
Simien has received countless awards, grants and recognition, including the first Grammy given for best zydeco/Cajun music. Simien's music was recently featured in the 2009 Disney film "The Princess and the Frog."
Upcoming performances in the 2010-11 Center Stage Series include "The Diary of Anne Frank" on Oct. 22 and "Professor Kubinek Meets the Symphony" on Nov. 6.
