As part of their visit to Luther, Danú will host "Pub Talk: The Importance of Pubs to Traditional Irish Music" Tuesday, March 9 at 5:30 p.m. Danú’s Benny McCarthy will lead a discussion on how Irish pubs have played a very important role in the growth and strength of traditional Irish music, and the many changes to this scene in recent years.

The Pub Talk, held in Marty’s CyberCafé in the lower level of Dahl Centennial Union on the Luther campus, is open to the public with no charge for admission.

Danú takes its audience on a musical journey to their native Ireland, offering a moving and memorable concert experience.

Hailing from historic County Waterford, Danú’s standing-room-only concerts throughout Ireland feature high-energy performances and a mix of ancient Irish music and new repertoire.

For more than a decade, Danú’s virtuosi vocals and flute, tin whistle, fiddle, button accordion and bouzouki instrumentalists, have performed around the globe and recorded seven critically acclaimed albums.

Though fiercely devoted to their traditional roots, the band is not afraid to experiment with arrangement and original music. Their second album, “Think Before You Think,” was voted best overall traditional act by Dublin’s magazine “Irish Music.”

They were voted best traditional group twice in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, the only band to do so.

Winners of numerous other awards from the BBC and Irish Music magazine, Danú has toured throughout Europe, the Middle East and North America. Most notably, Danú performed at The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Symphony Space in New York City, and major concert engagements in the United Kingdom, India, Israel, and across Europe.

Their recordings are available on the Shanachie label and live performances are often broadcast on NPR, the CBC and the BBC.

The final performance in the 2009-2010 Center Stage Series is Anoushka Shankar on April 10.
