Luther College faculty members, students and community members will perform in two Vespers services at First Lutheran Church in Decorah on Dec. 9 and 16 featuring the music of Johann Sebastian Bach.
Both services begin at 7 p.m. and are open to the public. Vespers is the evening prayer service in the Lutheran liturgies of the canonical hours.
The Wednesday, Dec. 9 Vespers service will feature the Chancel Choir of First Lutheran Church directed by Spencer Martin, Luther associate professor of music.
Luther faculty who will perform at the Dec. 9 service, include Martin, viola; William Kuhlman, organ; Gregory Peterson, organ; Karen Kanakis, soprano; Jacob Lasseter, baritone; Richard Tirk, trumpet; Jubal Fulks, violin; Eric Kutz, cello; Andrea Beckendorf, bass; Gabriel Shuford, organ and harpsichord; and Luther student Brooks Berg, violin.
Selections will include works for organ, arias from the Bach cantatas and movements from Bach’s instrumental works.
The Wednesday, Dec. 16, Vespers service also features the Chancel Choir of First Lutheran Church in a performance of the Bach Cantata “Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme,” BWV 140, as well as other works by Bach for organ and strings.
Faculty who will perform at the Dec. 16 service include Beckendorf, Fulks, Shuford, Kuhlman, Peterson and Berg, as well as Rachel Ware, soprano; Andrew Whitfield, baritone; Daniel Baldwin, cello; Heather Armstrong, oboe; James Griesheimer, English horn; Helen James, bassoon; and Luther students Ryan Deignan, tenor; Karla Dietmeyer, violin; Erik Malmquist, violin; Sean Dostal, viola; and Angela Kratchmer, viola.
