Things To Do

In addition to catching up with all things Luther and participating in events on campus, you may be wondering what you might do in Decorah and we’ve got some ideas:

Photo of Hmong story clothSpecial Exhibition
Paj Ntaub Dab Neej” Flower Cloth of People and Customs: Hmong Story Cloth from the Luther College Anthropology Collection.

Explore beautiful textile crafts of the Hmong who were resettled to northeast Iowa in the 1970s-1980s as refugees from Laos. The Hmong-made folk art documents their traditions and way of life before their exile from Laos as refugees.  Luther College, local churches and community members provided support to refugees that made Iowa their first home after escaping Communist regimes in southeast Asia. These Paj Ntaub were gifts to Decorah friends and sold at craft fairs to supplement family income. A number of these textiles have been donated to Luther College Anthropology Collection and are on display in the Dahl Union Gallery through December of 2023.

View Decorah’s very own giant sea scorpion

Pentecopterus decorahensis, is on permanent display in the connecting hallway between Sampson Hoffland Laboratories and Valders Hall of Science. Available for viewing every day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Vesterheim Museum

Open daily | 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. | Downtown Decorah

Exploring Vesterheim’s Main Building with its four floors of incredible artifacts is a delight. Wandering at your own speed, you can linger for as long as you wish at your favorite pieces.

Take a tour through the museum’s latest addition, the beautiful Vesterheim Commons and enjoy a guided tour of the museum’s Heritage Park – scheduled daily at 1:30 p.m. (Please call ahead to confirm in case of tour change.) Find out more about Heritage Park here.

Good to know: In 1877, Norwegian Americans began collecting and preserving objects at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, documenting their chapter of the immigrant story, making them pioneers in the preservation of cultural diversity in America. That early collection has grown into one of the most comprehensive museums in the United States dedicated to a single immigrant group—Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum, now an independent not-for-profit organization accredited by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM).
