Test-Optional Policy

Standardized test scores are not required.

Luther College believes in a holistic approach in evaluating each student’s application for admission. We consider your classes, grades, academic reference(s), extracurricular involvement, writing sample, and ACT or SAT scores. However, we understand that standardized test scores aren’t always the best indicator of a student’s ability to be academically successful in college. For that reason, submitting your ACT or SAT scores is optional. If you decide not to submit your scores, you will still be eligible for all of our merit scholarships and your application will be given the same level of consideration.

You should submit the strongest application possible. If you are concerned about your ACT or SAT score, we recommend that you consider applying test-optional so that your application can highlight your strengths in other ways. The admissions team is here to help you, so please reach out to us at admissions@luther.edu or 563-387-1287 and we will connect you with one of our admissions counselors who can talk through your specific situation.

The application will include a test-optional section with the question: “Should Luther consider your standardized test scores in the admission process?” If you don’t want us to receive your scores, select “No.”

We are able to make this change for students who have started their application but haven’t submitted it yet. Please reach out to the Admissions Office at admissions@luther.edu or 563-387-1287 and we can make a note in your file that you don’t want your ACT or SAT scores to be considered in your admissions decision.
