Security Reports

As required by the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act, Luther College publishes statistics about campus crime as well as policies and practices related to safety and security.

The reports on this page, as well as information in the Student Handbook, are published in compliance with the Clery Act. Since the original legislation in 1990, changes in regulation and interpretation have occurred, most notably the Higher Education Amendments of 1998, the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act in 2013 and 2022, and the Stop Campus Hazing Act in 2024.

Annual Security Report

In accordance with the Clery Act, Luther College disseminates an annual security report (ASR) to employees and students every October 1. It contains data from the preceding three calendar years, and it details efforts taken to improve campus safety.

Stop Campus Hazing Act

Luther College prohibits hazing by individuals or organizations, teams, ensembles and groups, defined as: any reckless or intentional act, occurring on or off campus, that produces physical, mental, or emotional pain, discomfort, humiliation, embarrassment, or ridicule directed toward other students or groups (regardless of their willingness to participate), that is required or expected of new members and which is not related to the mission of the organization, team, or group. This includes any activity, whether it is presented as optional or required, that places a new member in a position of servitude as a condition of membership. Any activities of membership should be equally shared among experienced and new members. Prohibited acts of hazing include those covered under Iowa State law (Iowa State Statute on Hazing § 708.10). The full hazing policy can be found in the Student Handbook.

Campus Hazing Transparency Report

In accordance with the Stop Campus Hazing Act, enacted December 23, 2024, Luther publishes a Campus Hazing Transparency Report on the college website twice per year. This report is available to the public and provides information regarding any established or recognized student organization that has been found in violation of the institution’s hazing policy. The report includes the following information:

  • Name of the student organization
  • Description of the violation, including whether the violation involved the abuse or illegal use of drugs or alcohol
  • Date the incident occurred
  • Date the investigation was initiated
  • Date the investigation concluded with a finding that a hazing violation occurred
  • Date the institution provided notice of the finding to the organization
  • Sanctions imposed
