With the goal of providing emotional and financial support to the children treated at Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, the Luther College Dance Marathon will hold their sixth annual LCDM Big Event from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday, April 13 in the Main Gym of the Regents Center on the Luther College Campus.
LCDM is a student organization focused on fundraising for the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital. They fundraise through a twelve-hour event filled with guest performers, speakers, games and, of course, dancing. LCDM is a part of a larger national movement, Miracle Network Dance Marathon, which is centered around celebrating the lives and struggles of children with serious and terminal illnesses.
Every year the LCDM community gets to know a new child, and this year that child is Thomas, the cousin of Luther alumna Elisabeth Hottel, '13. Diagnosed with stage four brain cancer at the end of January, Thomas is currently on the journey of kicking cancer, and his family will be flying in for the Big Event.
In addition to providing emotional and financial support to the children of CMN, LCDM has received a special project from the hospital and will spend the next two years raising funds specifically for the Music Therapy and Child Life departments of the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital.
This year's Big Event will feature several community and student guest performers, family speakers, games, bounce houses, a soccer tournament, silent disco, food, smoothies from Magpie coffeehouse, silent auctions, raffles and dancing. The event will be open to the Decorah community from 2-6 p.m. and all are encouraged to join in. It is tradition at this event that those who attend do not sit for the full twelve hours as a sign of solidarity for the children they are supporting. As the event comes to an end, the grand finale will include a big reveal of the fundraising totals. LCDM's goal for this year is $70,000 to go towards their special project with the hospital. They also hope to have an attendance of at least 400 dancers.
Luther College Dance Marathon is a community that supports the financial and emotional well-being of local Children’s Miracle Network families, while refining the unique strengths of the student leaders through joyful stewardship and service.
