Spirit of Uganda is a professional training and touring program, made up of 22 young dancers and musicians ages 8-18.
Produced by Empower African Children, a Dallas based non-profit organization, Spirit of Uganda brings to life the sounds and movements of East Africa though bright costumes, dramatic choreography, melodic tones of standing drums and call-and-response vocals.
Impassioned ambassadors for the culture of their homeland and Uganda's 2.4 million orphans, the children promote awareness of Uganda's dual crises of civil war and AIDS.
The money raised from performances is used to support the children and others in their homeland.
Spirit of Uganda tours North America every other year. The troop has performed in leading performing arts venues including New York's Joyce Theater, Philadelphia's Zellerbach Theatre and Chapel Hill's Memorial Hall. The company has also made special appearances at the Vancouver Cultural Olympiad, United Nations, and at Macy's Passport AIDS benefits.
Spirit of Uganda's performance is sponsored in part by Luther Diversity Council.
Upcoming performances in the 2011-12 Center Stage Series include the Brentano Quartet on March 2 and Damn Yankees on March 30.
