Bethany Lutheran defeated No. 16 Luther 5-4 in eight innings in today's second game of the ACM Tournament. The loss levels Luther's overall record to 2-2.
Trailing the Vikings 2-0 after two innings, the Norse exploded for all four of their runs in the top half of the third. With two outs, Paige Timmerman started the rally, with a ground rule double. Blake Banowetz followed with a single up the middle that scored Timmerman. Abby Gehringer hit a single and Addy Pender loaded the bases with a walk. Elsa Skeie drove in the final two runs with a double to center field.
The Vikings sent the game into extra frames scoring two runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
Due to time constraints, all games that go into extra innings at the ACM Tournament are completed with the international tie breaker rule. Each team gets an opportunity to produce runs, starting the inning with a runner on second and no outs.
After the Norse failed to score in the top of the eighth, The Vikings won the game with a single up the middle that scored the game winner.
Timmerman (3-4), Banowetz (2-4) and Gehringer (2-4) combined for seven of Luther's nine hits.
Luther wraps up its weekend at the Rochester Regional Dome tomorrow. The Norse will face Macalester at 10:00 a.m. and Ripon at Noon.
