Artist Talk: James Jankowiack

  • Date: Thursday, February 15, 2018
  • Time: 6:30 pm
  • Location: Center for the Arts, Room 203

James Jankowiack will give an artist lecture explaining his journey from southside graffiti artist to Chicago based installation artist, educator, and activist. He will highlight both his pedagogical practice working with community populations and also his studio practice which often extends out into the streets of Chicago in public spaces. A dedicated teaching artist, Jankowiak focuses on bringing contemporary practice to under-resourced students throughout his hometown of Chicago.

The artist has worked in the learning and public programming department of the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago since 2003. He has led numerous permanent public art projects both within Chicago Public Schools and neighborhood streets, and was recently commissioned to design artwork for the Chicago Transit Authority's newly constructed Union Station Transit Center in 2016. His work has been exhibited widely throughout Chicago in such venues as the MCA, Northwestern University, SAIC’s Roger Brown Gallery, and Johalla Projects. His work as an urban art educator is focused on giving access and voice to minority populations and community groups through artmaking.
