Luther became the first team in Iowa Conference history to captured a fourth IIAC Tournament title, defeating Coe 15-11 this afternoon in Cedar Rapids.
Yesterday, these two teams faced each other in the semifinals and combined for just six hits. Today was a different story as they combined for 30 hits, 17 by the Norse and 13 by the Kohawks. Five of the Norse hits were doubles and three were home runs.
The Norse scored in every inning except the seventh. Trailing the Norse 5-2 entering the bottom of the third, the Kohawks took their only lead of the game (6-5) scoring four runs on on six hits. The Norse responded with seven runs on six hits in the top of the fourth, that proved to be the difference in the game. In this frame, Kelsey Rose hit a two-run home run to right field and three batters later, Katie Wieland hit a three-run shot over the left field fence. Kristen Winter put two more runs on the board in the fifth with a two-run blasts to left field.
Seven different players produced multiple hits, led by Rose who was 3-for-5 with four RBI. Wieland also drove in four runs going 2-for-4. Carli Radil and Winter were credited with two RBI each.
Annie Versnik (4-1) picked up the victory in relief, while Becca Girvan was credited with her third save of the season.
Today's victory was Luther's 13th in a row. The Norse are now 30-6 and have posted 30 or more victories in a single season for eighth consecutive years.
Luther also secured the league's automatic berth to the NCAA III National Tournament. This will be the sixth consecutive appearance, seventh in the last eight years and 15th time in school history the Norse have qualified for postseason play.
What regional Luther will play in will be announced on the NCAA III selection show that will be broadcast tomorrow (Monday, April 5) on ncaa.com at 9:00 a.m. CT
