Luther and Gustavus Adolphus split today's double header that was played at Southeast Polk High School located just East of Des Moines in Pleasant Hill, Iowa.
In game one, trailing 5-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Luther tied the score thanks to RBIs by Mitch Bruggers and Trent Athmann. The Gusties responded with two in the top of the eighth en route to a 7-5 victory.
The Norse scored their five runs on eight hits, led by Derek McCready who was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
It was a crazy finish in game two as both teams did what they needed to level the score and win the ball game. Trailing 4-1 heading into their last at-bats, the Gusties scored three times to tie the ball game. In the bottom half of the inning, two walks followed by a game winning RBI single by Bryce Hingst, secured the 5-4 victory for the Norse.
Hingst had a big game going 2-for-4 and driving in three runs. Younger brother Ross Hingst picked up his first collegiate win on the mound facing one batter in the top of the seventh and stopped the Gustie rally. Matt Clark also had a multiple hit effort going 2-for-3.
The split gives Luther an overall record of 3-1. These two teams will face each other again tomorrow. Start time for the twin bill has been moved to 1:00 p.m.
