Luther took one more step towards capturing the American Rivers Conference championship this afternoon here in the valley. In a battle of undefeated teams, Luther posted an 8-1 victory over Wartburg College. The Norse swept doubles and won five of six singles singes matches.
In doubles, Lexi Hastings and Sofia Sackett put the first point on the scoreboard, defeating Ambriel Jacobs and Alyssa Guse (8-2). Devon Bourget and Shelby Cook were next thanks to an 8-4 victory at No. 1. The No. 3 doubles team of Stephanie Almquist and Anna Spencer were trailing 6-7 to Madison Overmann and Sydney Powers. The Norse duo battled back and won (8-7 (7-4)).
Five of the six singles victories were in straight sets. Cook at No. 2 won (6-1, 6-1); Sackett at No. 3 won (7-5, 6-2); Natalia Smith at No. 4 won (6-2, 6-2) and Almquist at No. 5 won (6-2, 6-0).
After dropping the first set (3-6) to Overmann at No. 1 singles, Bourget responded with a (6-0) victory in the second set, and went on to win the tie-breaker (10-8).
Luther is the lone unbeaten team in the A-R-C. The Norse are now 7-0, while the Knights fell to 5-1. The victory was also the 17th consecutive over an A-R-C opponent by the Norse dating back to Oct. 6, 2018.
Luther has clinched at least a share of the league title with today's victory. The Norse can win it outright tomorrow afternoon, with a win at Coe College, the final regular season match of the year. Start time is slated for 1:00 p.m. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
