Luther moved into a two-way tie for third place with Buena Vista University in the Iowa Conference standings after sweeping Central College in a double header this afternoon in Pella. The Norse won game one 4-3 in 10 innings and won game two by a final of 4-1.
In game one, Central sent the game into extra frames after scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the score at 3-3. In the top of the 10th, Jake Vogt lead-off with a double, that was followed by a bunt single by Jake Halverson that moved Vogt over to third. Two batters later, Bryce Hingst reached on an error by the Dutch pitcher, that also scored Vogt from third to give the Norse a 4-3 lead. Kyle Bode faced four batters in the bottom of the tenth and was credited with his first save of the year.
Vogt, Halverson and Derek McCready all had multiple hit efforts combining for seven of Luther's 11 hits.
The nightcap was only seven innings since game one went into extra frames. The Norse tallied four runs on seven hits, scoring once in both the first and sixth innings and twice in the fourth. Jake Halverson drove in two runs, while Trent Athmann and Hingst both drove in one.
Cameron Reed (1-1) was credited with the win. Reed pitched six innings, allowed one run on five hits, walked two and struck out two.
The two wins increased Luther win streak to six in a row. The Norse are now 6-2 in the Iowa Conference, 16-4 overall. Central fell to 1-7 in league play, 10-12 overall.
Luther will now face Coe College for three games this weekend. On Saturday, April 7, the two will play a double header (2x9) and on Sunday, April 8 they will play (1x9) game. Both days the first pitch will take place at 1:00 p.m.
