Late night baseball at US Bank Stadium, Minneapolis resulted in a 2-0 start, as Luther swept Carleton College 7-0, 18-0 (7). The final pitch took place around 3:05 a.m.
In game one, Collin Coffey pitched five innings and allowed just three hits and struck out five en route to his first win on the mound.
The Norse broke a 2-0 lead wide open scoring twice in the sixth and three times in the seventh. Tommy Gleason drove in two runs going 2-for-4. Cole Jensen, Jake Vogt, Bryce Hingst, Derek McCready and Kelby Johnson were all credited with one rbi. McCready also had a multiple hit opener posting a 3-for-4 performance and scoring twice.
Luther pounded out 14 hits that led to 18 runs in game two. The Norse exploded for 10 runs in the fourth frame and five in the fifth. McCready continued to swing a hot bat going 2-for-3 and driving in a team best four rbi. Bryce Hingst went 3-for-5 and drove in three rbi, while Matt Clark also drove in three runs as a pinch hitter. Multiple hits were also recorded by Cole Jensen (2-3) and Mitch Bruggers (2-3).
Joey Cardamon was credited with the win. Cardamon pitched six innings and gave up three hits and walked one.
Luther is schedule to play Gustavus Adolphus College March 10 and 11 at Southeast Polk High School, Pleasant Hill, Iowa. Both days the Norse and Gusties will play a double header (1x7, 1x9). March 10 start time is slated for 1:30 p.m. and March 11 at Noon.
