Luther defeated Simpson College in the semifinals of the Iowa Conference Tournament 84-61 tonight in the Regents Center. With the victory, Luther advances to the tournament championship game for the fourth year in a row.
The Norse took control of this game early exploding to a 19-8 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. They shot 55 percent in the first 20 minutes of play, that included an 8-of-14 effort from behind the three-point line. The squad finished with 15 triples tonight, three shy of the single game school record.
Sarah Holtz led a trio of double digit scorers pouring in a career high 18 points that all came in the first half. Katie Waller added 17 and Laura Hamilton was credited with 12. Hamilton was a force all over the floor recording five assists, five steals and grabbing seven rebounds. Maggie Anderson and Clarie Marburger were both one point shy of double digits. Anderson's nine points was a career high.
The Norse defense held the Storm to 37 percent for the night and they also won the battle of the boards 41-35.
Simpson was led by Jenna Taylor with 12 points off the bench. Noreen Morrow and Rachel Freland were both credited with 11.
The win gives Luther an overall record of 19-9. Simpson ends its season with a mark of 14-13.
Luther will travel to Waverly, Iowa this Saturday, Feb. 24, to face regular season championship Wartburg College. The Knights, ranked No. 2 in the NCAA III, defeated Loras tonight 63-46 and improved to 26-0 for the year. This will be the third time in the last four years that these two teams will face each other in the tournament championship game. Start time is slated for 4:00 p.m.
