Jazz Band Concert

  • Date: Sunday, April 25, 2021
  • Time: 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
  • Location: Livestream Event

The Luther College Jazz Band will present their spring concert on Saturday, April 25 at 6:00pm via a livestream on the Music Department's YouTube Channel. The program includes works by Stevie Wonder, Billy Strayhorn and two selections commemorating legendary jazz composers who passed this year: Sammy Nestico and Chick Corea. Two brand new works will also be featured - Ayn Inserto's "Notorious R.B.G." a celebration of the trailblazing Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg who died in September 2020 and Adam Meckler's arrangement of Max Roach's "Freedom Day" from the We Insist!: Freedom Now Suite - one of the earliest and most trenchant examples in jazz of protest music against racial injustice and violence. This event will be live streamed and can be viewed on the Luther College Music Department YouTube Channel.

The 20-member Luther College Jazz Band is directed by Jon Ailabouni and performs regularly throughout the year including Family Weekend events, the Homecoming Jazz Night at Marty's, and its own formal concert each semester. In Jazz Band, students immerse themselves in the jazz aesthetics expressed in composition, groove, and improvisation. And when the Jazz band plays music together, they lift up the ideals of individuality, creativity, and community.

The ensemble gives students a solid foundation in the jazz tradition of big band swing while at the same time exploring more contemporary genres and new jazz compositions and arrangements. Jazz Band helps prepare students for eventual membership in the Luther College Jazz Orchestra, one of the major touring ensembles at Luther.

Students of jazz at Luther have the opportunity to participate in two jazz bands, a jazz combo, vocal jazz, study jazz improvisation, composition/arranging, and history.

Auditions for Jazz Band are open to all students and are held at the beginning of the academic year with additional auditions at the beginning of the Spring semester to fill any open positions.
