Luther swept Loras this afternoon and Head Coach Bryan Nikkel recorded his 100th career win in front of the home fans. Luther posted a 4-3 come-from-behind victory in game one and rolled to a 10-0 victory in seven innings in the nightcap. Today's sweep gives Coach Nikkel a career win total of 100-63.
In game one trailing 3-1 entering the bottom of the fifth, Trent Athmann hit a three-run home run over the left field fence that proved to be the difference in the game. Athmann finished the game going 2-for-4 and was one of three players to produce multiple hits. The other two were Jake Vogt (2-for-3) and Jake Halverson (2-for-4).
Ross Hingst picked up the win in relief. Hingst threw the final seven innings and did not allow a run. He spread three hits, walked one and struck out six and improved to 3-2.
In the nightcap, the Norse exploded for 10 runs on 15 hits and put runs on the score board in every frame except one. Vogt led the offensive attack with three RBI, all coming on a three-run shot over the right field fence in the fifth. Athmann drove in the tenth and final run of the game, on a single to left field in the seventh. Derek McCready (2-for-3), Halvorson (2-for-4), Bryce Hingst (2-for-3), Mitch Bruggers (2-for-4) and Gannon Jordahl (2-for-4) also were members of the multiple hit club.
Joey Cardamon went the distance on the mound. Cardamon tossed a six-hit shut out, walked one and struck out four. He is now 6-0 for the year.
The two victories gives Luther an Iowa Conference record of 9-5, 19-9 overall. Loras fell to 9-5 in the IIAC, 19-9 overall.
These two teams will wrap of the weekend series tomorrow with a nine inning game that will begin at Noon.
