Luther hosted Buena Vista University for the Iowa Conference opener for both teams. Due to the high forecast of rain and possible snow hitting the Decorah area tomorrow, these two teams played a double header this afternoon. The remaining game of this three-game series has already been postponed for tomorrow and is currently rescheduled to take place on Sunday, March 25 with the first pitch slated for 3:00 p.m.
Buena Vista won game one 7-3 in 10 innings. With the score tied 3-3 heading in to the top of the 10th, the Beavers scored four runs on three hits to secure the victory.
Luther jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third. Trent Athmann, who completed the game going 4-for-5, drove in Jared Swanson who lead-off the inning with a walk. Bryce Hingst followed Athmann with a two-run home run over the right field fence, his second home run of the season. Hingst finished the game going 2-for-4.
Buena Vista tied the game scoring three times in the sixth that knocked Norse starter Colin Coffey out of the game. Coffey allowed the three runs on five hits, walked one and struck out three. Tyler Boesel was credited with the loss in relief. Boesel pitched the final four frames and allowed four runs on four hits, walked five and struck out three.
In the nightcap, Luther trailed Buena Vista 2-1 entering the bottom of the sixth. Game two was a scheduled seven inning game since game one went extra innings. The Norse exploded for six of their nine hits in the sixth and scored four runs to secure the 5-2 come-from-behind victory. Athmann, Derek McCready, Matt Clark and Mitch Bruggers all drove a run. Bruggers and Jake Vogt were the only Norse to produce a multiple hit game going 2-for-3 each.
Joey Cardamon went the distance on the mound and picked up his third win of the season against no losses. Cardamon allowed two runs on five hits, walked one and struck out three.
The split gives Luther an overall record of 10-2, while Buena Vista is now 5-10.
