Luther won the four-game weekend series (3-1) against Gustavus Adolphus College defeating the Gusties this afternoon 12-0 and 10-5. All four games were played at Southeast Polk High School, Pleasant Hill, Iowa.
In game one, Tyler Boesel tossed a three-hit, complete game shutout. Boesel retired the first 10 batters he faced and ended the afternoon with six strike outs.
Boesel had a lot of help from his teammates as the Norse pounded out 14 hits and put up crooked numbers on the score board in the first, third, fifth and seventh innings. Derek McCready, Tommy Gleason, Mitch Bruggers, Trent Athman and Jared Swanson all had two hits. Matt Clark and Athman hit back-to-back home runs in the third and Swanson led the team with three RBI.
In game two, the Norse continued to swing hot bats producing 12 hits. With the score tied 3-3, Luther scored four in the top half of the sixth and three in the seven en route to the victory.
Jake Halverson was 4-for-4 in the lead-off slot, scoring four times. Trent Athman went 3-for-4 and Derek McCready was 2-for-5. Jake Vogt was credited with three RBI, while Halverson and McCready each drove in two runs.
Joey Cardamon improved to 2-0 pitching six innings. Cardamon allowed three runs on six hits, walked one and struck out two.
Weather permitting, the Norse are scheduled to play Northland College (MN) and St. Olaf College (MN) Saturday and Sunday, March 17-18 at Independence High School (IA). On Saturday the Norse will play Northland (1x9) at 11:00 a.m., followed by St. Olaf (1x9) at 2:00 p.m. Sunday Luther begins play against Northland (1x9) at 2:00 p.m. and finishes the weekend against St. Olaf (1x9) at 5:00 p.m.
