Luther took the first two games of the three-game series against Simpson College this afternoon in Decorah. The Norse won game one by a final of 3-2 and followed with a 9-8 victory in the night cap.
Colin Coffey went the distance on the mound in game one. Coffey allowed two runs on two hits, walked two and struck out seven while improving to 3-0.
The Norse scored their three runs on eight hits, scoring two in the third and one in the fifth. Trent Athmann and Matt Clark had multiple hit games. Athmann was 3-for-3 with an RBI and Clark was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Bryce Hingst and Derek McCready were also credited with an RBI each.
Simpson made things a bit interesting in the night cap. With the Norse holding a 9-2 lead entering the top of the ninth, the Storm scored six runs on five hits, but finished one run shy of sending the game into extra frames.
Joey Cardamon (5-0) pitched eight solid innings and was credited with the win. Cardamon allowed two runs, while spreading five hits. He walked one and struck out seven. Ross Hingst (1) was credited with the save, striking out Nathan Carlin to end the game with the tying run at third.
Jake Vogt had a big game at the plate. Vogt was 4-for-5 that included two doubles and drove in two runs. Mitch Bruggers and Jared Swanson also had multiple hit efforts. Bruggers was 3-for-4, scoring three times and driving in one run, while Swanson went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and scored once. Bryce Hingst was 0-for-3, but drove in a run in the first on a sac fly to left field and drove in what proved to be the game winner in the eighth.
The Norse are now 3-2 in Iowa Conference play, 13-4 overall. Simpson fell to 1-4 in the IIAC, 2-14 overall.
These two teams will wrap up the series tomorrow with 1x9 inning game. Start time is scheduled for Noon.
