Jazz Band Concert

The Luther College Jazz Band will perform their spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 3rd, in the Main Hall of Luther's Center for Faith and Life.

The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. It will also be available 48 hours after the concert on via streaming.

The concert program features "Cottontail" by Duke Ellington, a piece based on the same chords as Gershwin's "I Got Rhythm." The band will perform "The Peanut Vendor" by Cuban composer Moises Simons, "Tickletoe" by Lester Young and the swing ballad "Kids are Pretty People" by Thad Jones. Rounding out the concert, jazz band will also play a piece arranged by Al Cohn and jazz standards composed by Neal Hefti, Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus.

The Luther jazz combo Free Time is featured on a lyrical waltz referencing the California town Bolinas, "Hullo Bolinas" by Steve Swallow.

Directed by Jon Ailabouni, adjunct faculty in music, the Luther College Jazz Band is a 20-member group that performs throughout the academic year, including Family Weekend, Homecoming Jazz Night at Marty's and a formal concert each semester. Jazz Band introduces students to the jazz traditions of swing, contemporary jazz and new compositions.

A trumpeter, jazz musician, and educator, 2010 Luther graduate Jon Ailabouni received a Master of Music from Western Michigan University. Ailabouni has toured internationally in France, Puerto Rico and Brazil, in addition to domestic festivals and conferences. He also enjoys collaborating on interdisciplinary works featuring his compositions with authors, choreographers and actors. At Luther, Ailabouni directs the Luther College Jazz Band, jazz combo program and teaches improvisation, jazz theory and arranging, jazz history, studio improvisation and trumpet lessons.
