Guest Lecture: Leif E Vaage, "Why does Religion need Poetry?"

  • Date: Friday, November 15, 2019
  • Time: 5:30 pm
  • Location: Franklin W. Olin Building, Room 102

Theology and poetry share a unique, undeniable relationship. They both aim to articulate what always escapes our grasp - the world beyond or without humans, the impossible possible, or the emptying hope of a greater wholeness. This lecture will discuss many poems circling around the topic of "resurrection," and feature poems from Vaage's recently published collection, Metaphysical Athlete.

Leif E. Vaage has served as professor of religion and theology at Emmanuel College of Victoria University in Toronto, the University of Oslo, Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany, the University of Salamanca in Spain, and the Methodist University of Sao Bernardo do Campo in Brazil. After teaching at various universities all over the world, Vaage has since relocated to Guysborough, Nova Scotia where he is currently exploring new ventures in his retirement (such as sailing and small-engine repair) with his wife.
