Applied Learning
Luther’s academic program recommends education beyond the classroom walls and encourages students to engage in real-world learning in order to test their career goals and gain valuable professional experience.
Student Opportunities
Many of our students belong to local and national mathematics societies, as well as participate in competitions at the state, national, and international level. Luther has a great history of success in these competitions, including teams that won back-to-back championships at the Iowa Collegiate Math Competition.
- The Luther Math Club is a campus organization for students interested in mathematics and provides opportunities for participation in recreational math exercises and social functions.
- Pi Mu Epsilon (ΠΜΕ or PME) is the U.S. honorary national mathematics society. The society is dedicated to the promotion of mathematics and recognition of students who successfully pursue mathematical understanding.
- The Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) challenges teams of students from all over the world to clarify, analyze, and propose solutions to open-ended problems. Luther has had at least one team participate in the event since the year 1992.
- The Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (ICM) is an international contest for high school students and college undergraduates. ICM is an extension of the Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM). It is designed to develop and advance interdisciplinary problem-solving skills as well as competence in written communication.
- Summer research, internships, and study abroad opportunities are available as well.
Internships, Summer Research, and Study Away Opportunities
Internships are an important component of this applied learning, and Luther helps match mathematics majors with competitive internships with insurance companies, financial institutions, commercial retailers, and healthcare organizations. Mathematics majors have interned with the Mayo Clinic, Securian Financial, and Target, among other organizations.
For more information about internship opportunities at Luther, visit the Luther College Career Center’s internship program.
- The National Science Foundation (NSF) funds several summer research experiences for undergraduates (REU) in mathematics.
- The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) also maintains a list of summer REU opportunities.
- The Joint Program in Survey Methodology (JPSM) offers paid summer internships at federal statistical agencies in Washington, D.C.
- The Mathematics Advanced Study Semester (MASS) program at Penn State is a fall semester intensive program for undergraduate mathematics.
- Budapest Semesters in Mathematics (BSM) offers mathematics courses (taught in English) from leading Hungarian scholars for one semester of your junior or senior year.
- Math in Moscow at the Independent University of Moscow offers mathematics and computer science courses (in English) to undergraduate and graduate students.
- Junior Year for Women at Smith College is a program for women in their junior year who want an intense mathematical experience (for a semester or a full year) alongside other women.
- The University of Nebraska Summer IMMERSE Program is designed to help prepare students who will be entering graduate school in mathematics the following fall.
