Anita Carrasco visits the American Heritage Center

Anita Carrasco, assistant professor of Anthropology at Luther College, visited the American Heritage Center (AHC) in the summer of 2016 as part of their travel research grant program. There, Carrasco examined the impact of American mining corporations on the indigenous populations of Chile in the Atacama desert.

Anita Carrasco given Nena Amundson Professorship Award

Anita Carrasco, assistant professor of anthropology was awarded the 2016-18 Nena Amundson Professorship Award for her project: Healers, Sorcerers and Misfortune: "Indigenous Women’s Strategies for the Protection of their Health and Wellness." Specifically, Carrasco will identify three elements: (1) the strategies women adopt to prevent, mitigate or eliminate the events that hinder their health and wellness; (2) the circumstances that drive them to decide to consult the services of healers and sorcerers in their quest to understand the sources of their misfortunes; and finally, (3) why they postpone consulting the country’s medical and legal system to protect themselves.

Maryna Bazlevych and Brittany Anderson Present at Conference

Maryna Bazylevych and Brittany Anderson co-presented a paper at the Society for the Applied Anthropology Meeting in Vancouver, Canada on March 31st. Entitled "Fire into Flame: Categories of Risk among Young People in Ukraine," this presentation completes their 2 year collaborative project on imaginaries of good health among Ukrainian youth sponsored by Nena Amundson Distinguished Professorship.

Price Lecture featuring Assistant Professor Of Anthropology Paola Canova

Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Texas-Austin Paola Canova gave a lecture titled "Empowerment Lessons from the Margins: An Examination of Ayoreo Sexuality in Paraguay's Chaco Region" in Spring 2016 as part of the Price Lecture Endowment.

The event was sponsored by Luther's Women and Gender Studies department and organized by Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Gender Studies Maryna Bazylevych and Assistant Professor of Anthropology Anita Carrasco.

Heather Schacht Reisinger (‘96) speaks to students and faculty

Luther Graduate Guest Lecture on Medical Anthropology

Heather Schacht Reisinger (‘96) gave a guest talk and hosted a career development workshop for anthropology students during 2016 January term. She is a medical anthropologist working at the US Department of Veterans Affairs and an Assistant Professor of General Internal Medicine Division at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. She coached anthropology students and others interested in pursuing careers in public health and applied anthropology.

Anthropology Faculty Attend National Conference in Denver

Maryna Bazylevych and Anita Carrasco have just returned from the 114th Annual Meeting of the American Anthropological Association in Denver, Colorado. They both presented their research papers entitled "Demystifying Wellbeing and Health Threat: Categories of Risk Among Young People in Ukraine" and "Autism and the Barriers to Becoming a ‘Participant’ of ‘Culture’" respectively.
