Luther College Book Shop will host a performance and signing session of the book "Askelad and the Seven Silver Ducks" with narrators/performers Carrie Vecchione and Rolf Erdahl Saturday, July 28 from 1-2 p.m. in the Luther Book Shop, in Dahl Centennial Union on the Luther campus.
"Askelad and the Seven Silver Ducks" is a traditional Norwegian folk tale set to music and illustrated by Margi Griebling-Haigh. It includes a book and a CD, which was recorded by Vecchione, oboe and English horn, and Erdahl, double bass.
The book and CD set is available for purchase in the Luther Book Shop for $14.99.
The performance by the Vecchione-Erdahl Duo is open to the public with no charge for admission.
In 2007 Griebling-Haigh received a Jerome Composer Commission from the American Composers Forum, which resulted in a chamber music setting of "Askelad and the Seven Silver Ducks," complete with a recording by the Vecchione-Erdahl Duo, and her own illustrated children's book.
Vecchione teaches at the MacPhail Center for Music, subs with the Minnesota Orchestra and appears as principal oboe of the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra.
Erdahl, Luther adjunct faculty in music, subs for the Minnesota Orchestra, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and Minnesota Opera. He teaches bass at Luther, Gustavus Adolphus College and the Lutheran Summer Music Festival.
The Vecchione-Erdahl Duo's efforts have effectively created a new repertoire for duo oboe/English horn and double bass through the music that has been written for them. They perform widely across the country on recital series, at colleges and universities and at conferences of the International Double Reed Society and International Society of Bassists.
