Luther College to host guest lecturer Yvonne Förster May 7

Discussing the impact of technology on culture, Yvonne Förster, a research professor at Shanxi University-Taiyuan, China, and a professor of philosophy at Leuphana University-Lüneburg, Germany, will speak at Luther College. She will present the lecture, “Transcending the Human: Technology and the Liberal Arts,” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, in Olin room 102 on Luther’s campus.

The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission.

A philosopher with expertise in phenomenology, continental philosophy, theories of embodiment and aesthetics, Förster will speak about contemporary advances in technology and their impact on human self-understanding, art and culture.

Förster completed her graduate work at Friedrich Schiller University-Jena, focusing on experience and ontology of time. She has been appointed junior professor at Leuphana University-Lüneburg and visiting professor for aesthetics at Bauhaus University-Weimar.

Förster’s recent research was awarded Senior Research Fellowships at the University of Konstanz and at the Institute for Advanced Study on “Media Cultures of Computer Simulation” at Leuphana University. Her research focuses on philosophy of technology, aesthetics, phenomenology and fashion as art. She is also a member of the German Association for Philosophy, the German Association for Phenomenological Research and the Association for Cultural Studies.
