Following the footsteps of a public health nurse, Luther sophomore Charles Ian Ces of Tabaco City, Philippines, spent four weeks of his summer as an intern at the Tabaco City Health Unit. Ces, son of Ana and Jimuel Ces, is a 2014 graduate of the Engineering Science Education Program at Tabaco National High School and also received International Baccalaureate Program Bilingual Diploma from United World College of the Atlantic in Wales, United Kingdom in 2016.
Featuring a sequential series of photo collages with text created by Luther College alumna Sarah Frydenlund, “Rush In,” is on display through Dec. 15 in Preus Library on the Luther campus. The exhibit is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Thomas Mitchell, Luther College senior, completed a summer management internship in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with Iron Grate BBQ. He helped the restaurant move locations and in turn gained insight in restaurant ownership.
A Luther College alumna who was a member of the first women’s cross country team and her husband have provided a gift of $1 million to establish the Kent Finanger Endowed Chair for Women’s Cross Country and Track and Field. The alumna shared the reason surrounding the couple’s decision to create the Finanger Chair, “As a student and runner, I thrived under Coach Kent‘s leadership. The immense respect I have for him and his nurturing abilities have unequivocally impacted my life.”
As a part of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, the Luther College Music Department will present a Reformation Commemoration Concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 31, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall on the Luther campus. It will feature a new multi-movement choral work with contributions from four Luther alumni and four current Luther students, as well as a newly-commissioned band piece.
Andrew Whitfield, associate professor of music, and Nicholas Shaneyfelt, assistant professor of music, will present a faculty recital on Friday, Oct. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music on the Luther campus. The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Geoffrey Dyck, Luther College senior, learned how a federal elections bill from 1890 can still be relevant in today’s governmental structure in his summer internship in Washington D.C. with the Secretary of the Senate, Julie E. Adams, Luther class of 1999.
One might think that not many people would want to spend part of their summer vacation in prison, but that’s exactly what Luther College junior Matthew Clark did. Clark spent his summer internship in construction work which took him inside Minnesota’s largest close-security prison for male felons for a short time. This certainly reinforced Clark’s belief in the importance of ethics and doing the right thing.
Luther College senior Christopher O’Connell of Rochester, Minnesota, is Luther’s 2017 Presser Scholarship Award recipient.
Luther College senior Charles Craig was presented the 2017 Hemp Family Prize, at Luther’s Homecoming concert, Sunday, Oct. 8. The Hemp Family Prize was one of four awards announced during the concert.
