Luther Senior Hall completes summer internship at Lanesboro Arts

Martha Hall, Luther College senior, served as the communications intern at Lanesboro Arts in Lanesboro, Minnesota, over the summer. She is the daughter of Kate Brennan Hall and John Hall of Cedar Falls, Iowa. Hall graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 2014.

Hall’s responsibilities included creating marketing materials, in the form of posters, magazine advertisements and materials, for the art gallery. She also helped organize events for Lanesboro Arts, worked in the ticket office of the St. Mane Theatre and generated web content for social media channels and other programs.

Hall learned about grant writing and the importance of art in small and rural communities. Another concept she learned while interning is creative placemaking, which involves integrating art into the essence of communities through public art projects.

“The opportunity to work for Lanesboro Arts broadened my insight of the arts management field, and gave me unique opportunities that challenged me. It showed me that many different fields can be tied into arts management: communications, writing, design, customer service and more,” Hall said. She is looking forward to further developing her arts management career after graduation from Luther.

Approximately 10 percent of Luther students take an internship for academic credit each academic year. The Luther College Career Center assists students with their internship search through resume preparation, networking, online internship searches, career fairs, on-campus interviewing, and connecting the student to alumni through the college’s Alumni Internship Program. Students also meet with a faculty adviser prior to the internship to create an internship learning plan which includes learning goals and assessment benchmarks. An internship work supervisor assists in the process by writing an evaluation of the student at the end of the internship. Students also complete a self-reflection form to help finalize the learning experience.

A national liberal arts college with an enrollment of 2,050, Luther offers an academic curriculum that leads to the Bachelor of Arts degree in more than 60 majors and pre-professional programs. For more information about Luther visit the college’s website: http://www.luther.edu.
