Luther College hosts events in celebration of Women’s History Month

From Susan B. Anthony and Sojourner Truth to Greta Thunberg and Amanda Gorman, women have made and continue to make a profound impact on the world. In honor of Women's History Month, Luther College has planned events throughout the month of March to celebrate the contributions of women to history, society and culture. All events are free and open to the public, with viewing information available at luther.edu/events.

            10:30 a.m. Monday, March 8 (International Women's Day) - Weekday Chapel

Lisa Scott, vice president for equity, inclusion and student success will lead Weekday Chapel. 

            4-5 p.m. Monday, March 8 - Panel Discussion: "Women in the Lead: Student Experiences at Luther College" 

            Celebrate International Women's Day with a panel of Luther student leaders sharing the joys and challenges of being "women in the lead." The panelists are Kelao Charmaine Neumbo "˜22 (president, International Students and Allies Assn.), Evelyn Montoya "˜23 (president, Latines Unides) and Ursula Damtse "˜22 (social media coordinator, Black Student Union). The event will be moderated by Salomé Valdivieso S. "˜23 (president, Intersectional Feminist Club).

            4 p.m. Monday, March 15 - Sihler Lecture: "Mother Dear: Alberta King, Martin Luther King Jr., and Ebenezer Sound, 1922-1974"

            Hear Dr. Maurice Wallace, professor of English from Rutgers University, present the Sihler Endowed Lecture honoring women and church music. Wallace is the author of "Constructing the Black Masculine: Identity and Ideality in African American Men's Literature and Culture, 1775-1995"  and ""˜Precious Lord': Black Mother-Loss and the Roots of Modern Gospel." He is also co-editor of a volume of scholarly articles on early photography and African American identity entitled "Pictures and Progress: Early Photography and the Making of African-American Identity."

            7 p.m. Tuesday, March 16 - Film Showing: "The Man Card: White Male Identity Politics from Nixon to Trump" 

            "The Man Card: White Male Identity Politics from Nixon to Trump" examines the political right's long-standing use of white male identity politics in American presidential elections. Attend this virtual documentary screening with discussion to follow, moderated by Derek Sweet and Thomas C. Johnson, professors of communication studies.

            7 p.m. Friday, March 19 and Saturday, March 27 - Monologues 2021: "Everything in Between"¦"

            Presented by the Luther College Intersectional Feminist Club, this original stage production shares the untold stories of Luther's diverse campus community, reflecting on body, gender and sexuality. All donations will go towards Udeshya: Girls in STEM in Nepal. 

            4:30 p.m. Thursday, March 25 - Alum Panel: "Living a Feminist Life"

            Hear from four Luther College graduates whose lives and careers continue to inspire and be inspired by feminism. The panelists are Gracie Coletta "˜14, Wylie Cook "˜18, Marley Crossland "˜15 and Margaret Kienitz "˜16. The discussion will be moderated by Holly Moore, professor of philosophy and identity studies. 

Women's History Month events at Luther College are made possible with the support of the new Identity Studies program. Identity Studies focuses on understanding the intersections of identities, how knowledge is embodied and how unequal access to power creates systems of exclusion and inclusion.
