Three Luther students receive the Karen Julesberg scholarship

Luther College students Tyler Conzett, Catelyn Janda and Liliana Mondragon have each received a Karen Julesberg Scholarship for the 2018-19 academic year. The $1,000 scholarship, created by Karen Julesberg of Madison, Wisconsin, Luther class of 1960, benefits Luther students involved in the TRIO Achievement Program. TRIO is a federally-funded program providing holistic, individualized support and comprehensive programming that promotes students’ academic success, personal development and sense of community.

“It is an honor and pleasure to make a difference in the lives of Luther students,” said Julesberg.

Tyler Conzett, of Galena, Illinois, is majoring in computer science and music. A trumpet player, he serves as secretary of the Pep Band and as a Resident Assistant in a first-year residence hall. He has volunteered through SAC Service and the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity and is a current member of the Computer Science Society and the Catholic Student Community on campus. Conzett plans to pursue a career in software development after graduating from Luther in 2019.

Catelyn Janda, of Batavia, Illinois, is majoring in music, with a minor in education. She is principal violist with the Luther College Symphony Orchestra, and she has also performed with the Luther College Chamber Orchestra, Cathedral Choir and Collegiate Chorale. A recent inductee into the Pi Kappa Lambda national music honor society, she is a member of the Future Music Educators Association and a volunteer counselor with Dorian Summer Music Camp. Her leadership abilities have led to her promotion next year from Resident Assistant to Assistant Larsen Hall Director. Janda plans to pursue a teaching career after graduating with the Luther College class of 2019.

Liliana Mondragon, of Mecca, California, is majoring in history with a minor in Spanish. She serves as the historian for Alpha Beta Psi sorority on campus and is a member of the Lambda Omega Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta international honor society for history. This summer, she is doing research at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign through the Graduate School Exploration Fellowship program. GSEF offers students a chance to do research for a summer as well as be part of programming through Associated Colleges of the Midwest to help prepare for graduate school. After graduating from Luther in 2019, Mondragon plans to pursue her Ph.D. in history.

The TRIO Achievement Program provides services ranging from tutoring and advising to leadership development and graduate school preparation for more than 165 students annually. Julesberg said, “When I was considering the many worthwhile opportunities that support Luther students and programs, it took me some time to select one that not only fit my interests but also touched my heart.

“Once I learned about TRIO with its variety of activities designed to support income-eligible and first-generation students, my choice was easy.”
