Luther College String Trio with Heather Armstrong perform Oct. 25

The Luther College String Trio, in collaboration with Heather Armstrong, oboe, will present a recital at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 25, in the Noble Recital Hall in the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music on the Luther campus.

The trio is comprised of Luther faculty members Igor Kalnin, violin; Spencer Martin, viola; and Philip Borter, cello.

Works performed include selections from Bach’s “Three Part Inventions,” Mozart’s “Oboe Quartet in F Major,” “Phantasy Quartet for Oboe and Strings” by Benjamin Britten, and Astor Piazzolla’s “Two Tangos.”

The performance is open to the public with no charge for admission.

In addition to the performance at Luther, the group will travel to Des Moines and Minneapolis to perform and give masterclasses to pre-college students. They will perform at Luther Church of Hope in West Des Moines at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, and at the MacPhail Center for Music in Minneapolis at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29. Both off-campus performances are open to the public with no charge for admission.

Luther is home to one of the largest collegiate music programs in the nation, with six choirs, three orchestras, three bands, two jazz bands and more than 800 student musicians. Luther students participate in large ensembles, faculty-coached chamber groups, private lessons and master classes. Nearly 275 music majors study music theory, ear training, history, education, composition, jazz, church music and performance.
