Thanks to a generous donation by lifetime conservation enthusiast Donald Nelson, the Luther College Land Stewardship Program has new longevity and stability. Nelson, who established the Donald H. Nelson Endowment, most recently donated $500,000 to Luther, with $40,000 set aside to create the Lionberger Preserve Wetland Restoration Project.

Luther College’s spring 2018 Dean’s List includes 732 students; 96 first-years, 135 sophomores, 184 juniors and 317 seniors. To be named to the Dean’s List, a student must earn a semester grade point average of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale and must complete at least 12 credit hours with 10 hours of conventional grades (A, B, C, D).

Paula J. Carlson, the 10th president of Luther College, has communicated to the Board of Regents her decision to retire from Luther College effective at the end of the 2018-19 academic year. As a result, the Board of Regents will initiate a search process in the coming months to identify President Carlson’s successor to begin serving Luther in the summer of 2019.

Luther College President Paula Carlson announced that Luther alumni Chris Gade and Chip Norris will join Luther’s Board of Regents.

The Calvin Institute of Christian Worship in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is awarding Luther College a grant of $9,135 through its Vital Worship Grants Program, funded by Lilly Endowment Inc.

Luther College President Paula J. Carlson has announced that staff members Bradley Phillips and Erik Stoen are the 2017-18 recipients of the Luther Staff Excellence Award. Phillips and Stoen were recognized at a ceremony last summer.

Luther College sophomore Maggie Breitenstein has been named to the 2018-19 BACCHUS Initiatives Student Advisory Committee as a Student Advisory Committee Representative for Region IV-E, representing Ohio, Michigan, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Indiana and Ontario. This committee is a part of NASPA, Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education. The BACCHUS Initiative of NASPA supports collegiate peer educators and advisors by empowering students and student affairs administrators to create healthy and safe campus environments.

Luther College President Paula Carlson announced that Luther alumnae Shannon Duval and Anjela Shutts will join Luther’s Board of Regents.

Luther College was awarded a $200,000 grant from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust to enhance curriculum and provide educational laboratory experiences for students in the new neuroscience major.

The Modern Language Association awarded the Katherine Singer Kovacs Prize for an outstanding book published in English or Spanish in the field of Latin American and Spanish literatures and cultures to Luther College’s Nancy J. Gates Madsen for her book “Trauma, Taboo, and Truth-Telling: Listening to Silences in Postdictatorship Argentina,” published by the University of Wisconsin Press.
