No. 22 Luther defeated Wartburg College 2-0 tonight in the semifinal round of the American Rivers Conference Tournament. The Norse have now advanced to the championship match of the conference tournament for a tenth time and third year in a row. The conference tournament began in 1996. After last night's victory, the Norse have now recorded an overall tournament record of 25-11-4 that includes a mark of 10-7-1 in semifinal matches.
Ben Keller scored what proved to be the game winner at 27:56 on a header off a corner kick by Brunno Colon (6). Keller's goal was his ninth of the year and sixth game winner.
Marc-Arthur Shapiro scored the insurance goal at 70:02, off a cross from the right side of the box by Faydane Ouro-Akondo (3). Shapiro's goal was his first of the year.
The win gives Luther an overall record of 15-3-1. Wartburg's season comes to an end with a mark of 9-7-3.
Luther will travel to No. 1 seed and regular season champions Loras College (13-5) on Saturday, Nov. 3. Start time is slated for 7:30 p.m. in the Rock Bowl.
Loras breezed to a 3-0 victory over No. 5 Central College in the other semifinal and have now reached the championship tilt a league record 18 times.
Luther and Loras have meet on the tournament championship stage, including this year, seven times. Luther won the first four meetings (1997 (4-0), 1999 (2-0), 2001 (2-1 OT), 2016 (4-3)). It's only loss to the Duhawks was 2011 (1-0). Last year, Loras earned the league's automatic berth to the NCAA III National Tournament on penalty kicks (3-1), following a 2-2 double overtime tie.
