Luther improved to 7-5 in the Iowa Conference after defeating Central College 10-4 this afternoon at Independence High School.
This game was originally scheduled to be played at Luther starting at 3:00 p.m. At Noon the field was playable, but by 1:15 p.m. the infield had turned to a mud bowl when the frost busted out of the ground. The start time was moved back to 4:00 p.m.
As the coaching staff and many of the players were desperately working in an attempt to make the infield playable. Three phone calls were made, one to Independence High School Activities Director Justin Putz, one to Iowa Commissioner Chuck Yrigoyen and one to Luther bus driver Jeff Ode. Putz and Yriogeyn agreed to let the game be played at the Independence High School baseball field that has an turf infield. Ode changed plans on his day off and agreed to drive the Luther bus.
At 2:30 p.m., the caravan of teams, trainers, sports information department and Luther Associate Athletic Director for Operations Alex Smith jump in cars and headed south. First pitch was thrown at 5:07 p.m.
Luther held a 2-0 lead after two, but the Dutch responded with a run in the fifth and two in the sixth and held a 3-2 advantage as the Norse entered the bottom of the sixth. In the sixth, Kelby Johnson gave the Norse the lead for good with a three-run blast over the center field fence. Johnson ended the evening going 3-for-3 and scoring three times.
The Norse added three more in the seventh and two in the eighth en route to the victory.
Cameron Reed was credited with the win in relief. Reed took over for Joey Cardamon who pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on eight hits. Reed allowed two hits and struck out one in 2 1/3 innings on the mound. Sean Westendorf pitch the ninth and allowed one run on one hit.
Luther tallied 15 hits. Jake Vogt (2-for-5) and Trent Athmann (2-for-4) joined Johnson producing multiple hits.
The win gives Luther an overall record of 17-7. Central fell to 1-8 in the Iowa Conference 10-15 overall.
Luther is scheduled to play at Wartburg this Friday and Saturday. Friday's (1x9) game is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. Saturday's double header (2x9) will begin at 1:00 p.m.
