For the second time in as many days the men's golf team played in an 18-hole tournament and finished atop the leader board.
This afternoon, Luther traveled to the La Crosse Country Club, a par 72 that measured 6,714 yards and participated in the Viterbo Fall Invitational. The golf course was in great shape, but wind gusts that reached as high as 25-30 mph caused scores to climb. There were 31 players in the field and only five posted scores below 80.
Luther finished with a team total of 312. Waldorf University was 12 strokes back at 324. Host Viterbo University carded a 341 and Southwest Tech finished at 356.
Ben Phipps was medalist with a three-under 69. He finished eight strokes ahead of runner-up Cole Ruckman from Waldorf College who shot a 77. On the back nine, Phipps recorded an albatross, also called a double eagle, on a par five. Following his drive, he holed out with an eight iron, recording the rare feat.
Brandon Dorans and Jay Fjelstul also posted top-10 finishes. Dorans finished in a tie for fourth with a 79, while Fjelstsul was sixth with an 80. Chris O'Brien (84) finished 11th and Skyler Gish (92) completed the Norse five in 25th place.
Four players competed as individuals led by Julian Olson (87) who finished tied for 14th place. Carson Hagen (T20th - 88), Matias Parada (27th - 94) and Adam Suelflow (30th - 106) completed the list.
Luther's final tournament of the fall schedule will take place Oct. 12-13. Luther will play in the Central College Fall Classic at Finkbine Golf Course, Iowa City, Iowa. Tee times are scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.
