Luther hosted St. Mary's University (MN) for a non-conference double header on a chilly afternoon here in Decorah. The Norse split with the Cardinals dropping game one 7-4 and winning the night cap 2-1 in eight innings. Both games were schedule seven inning affairs.
In game one, the Cardinals scored five of their seven runs in the fifth. After the Norse committed a two-out error, the Cardinals Andy Tepp capped off the five-run inning with a three-run home run to left field.
Trailing 7-2 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Norse loaded the bases with no outs, but managed just two runs on two hits to end the game.
Sometimes baseball can be a crazy game and the night cap proved this correct. With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the eighth, Trent Athmann hit a two-out walk-off home run over the left field fence to secure the win. Prior to his game winning hit, Cardinal pitcher Ryan Wolfe had held the Norse in check, allowing just four hits and had retired 11 in a row, that included four of his six strike outs.
Sean Westendorf got the start on the mound for the Norse and pitched well, allowing one run on four hits, walking two and striking out two, in six innings of work and a no decision. Joey Cardamon threw a one-two-three inning in the seventh, and Tyler Boesel was credited with the win, allowing two hits and no runs in the eighth.
The split gives Luther an overall record of 11-4. St. Mary's is now 6-9.
Luther returns to Iowa Conference action this Friday and Saturday, March 30 & 31. The Norse will host the Storm of Simpson College. Friday's 1x9 game will begin at 3:00 p.m. Saturday's 2x9 double header is slated to begin at Noon.
